University of Mysore increases PG seats by ten percent

6:14 PM
MYSORE: Students of University of Mysore have a reason to celebrate and rejoice as they have ten percent more number of free seats at stake for them to claim. UOM has taken a decision to increase the number of seats in free category by ten percent.
It is said that UOM syndicate has arrived at this decision to increase the free seats keeping in mind the increasing urge among the students passing out of the colleges to study higher courses. Now almost 240 seats in various departments will be available for the students under A scheme this year.
UOM has taken this decision without disturbing the number of seats falling under payment category which fill it's coffers . At present 2/3 of the seats in PG courses are given to students on merit basis and categorized as "A" scheme and the remaining 1/3rd of seats are given to students who are ready to pay high fees fixed by the UOM and they are categorized as " "B scheme students.
Though students under both the schemes are selected on merit basis , students under B scheme will pay more fees against the minimum fees paid by students selected under A scheme. For instance if a student selected under A scheme pays a fee of Rs 1000 , it is almost ten times more (Rs 10000) for the student selected under B scheme.
Sources revealed to TOI that there was a discussion at the recent Syndicate meeting to cancel the B scheme and allot all seats to meritorious students at a subsidized fee rates . But the authorities claimed that it would become tough for the UOM to mobilize resources if this two tier system of admissions is abolished .
But this decision has evoked mixed response from the UOM teachers, a section of teachers feel that there was no need for increasing the number of seats as the demand of PG courses is decreasing due to various reasons which include establishment of more universities and giving autonomy to colleges to start PG courses . On the hand other section opine that this will help the students from the region who have no capacity to pay higher fees but want to continue their studies. When there is increase in the percentage of passes at various levels of education it becomes imperative on the part of the universities to make avail the free seats .HERE
