ABOUT Malaria Haikubaliki
WHAT IS MALARIA?
Malaria is a disease caused by parasites of the Plasmodium species. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected anopheles mosquito. The parasite enters the bloodstream and causes fever, headaches and other flu-like symptoms. If left untreated, the infection in its most severe forms can lead to a coma and death.
WHAT IS MALARIA’S EFFECT IN TANZANIA?
According to the National Malaria Control Program in Tanzania:
The number of clinical malaria cases per year is estimated to be 17-20 million resulting in approximately 80,000 deaths.
It is estimated that malaria contributes to about 36% of all deaths in Tanzanian children less than five years of age and pregnant women are especially vulnerable to malaria due to their low immunity status.
Over 40% of all outpatient attendances are attributed to malaria in health facilities.
In every 5 minutes one child dies because of malaria
Malaria disproportionately affects the poor, particularly children and pregnant women who are more likely to be exposed to infection and have the most limited access to malaria prevention, treatment, and control measures.
In addition to the death toll, malaria contributes to the cycle of poverty and limits economic
Development: Malaria illness and death cost Africa at least $12 billion in lost productivity every year
Malaria also contributes difficulties in school-26.3 percent of children with cerebral malaria test positive for cognitive impairment two years later.
CAN WE REDUCE MALARIA DEATHS?
YES. Malaria is a preventable and treatable disease.
Simple tools like LLINs (Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets), prompt treatment-seeking for children’s fever, correct diagnosis of malaria, treatment with the correct medicine (ACTs), two doses of preventative treatment for pregnant women and safe indoor spraying save lives every day. The Malaria Haikubaliki (Malaria is Unacceptable) national communication campaign covers all malaria interventions in communicating to Tanzanians important information about these interventions. The National Malaria Haikubaliki campaign is being implemented by a number of malaria partners in Tanzania including Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs, PSI, NMCP and MNM.
SUCCESS IS WITHIN OUR GRASP
Tanzania has very strong malaria programming and the tools to kick malaria out of the country. There are currently many ongoing net programs: Hati punguzo is a voucher scheme that offers highly subsidized ITNs to pregnant women and children below one year of age, the Under five catch up campaign (U5CC) it is a mass distribution of free LLINs (Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets) to all children under five years of age and the current Universal Coverage Campaign will ensure that all sleeping spaces in Tanzania will be covered by free LLINs.
