Tanzania, Kenya formulate joint water projects

2:44 PM

The governments of Tanzania and Kenya have started negotiations to establish shared water projects to be used by residents of Moshi and Rombo districts.

Water and Irrigation deputy minister Christopher Chiza said on Tuesday that the shared water projects would mainly be for Umba River, lakes Chala and Jipe. He said once agreed, they would form a special organisation under the East African Community (EAC) which would supervise the projects.

Chiza was responding to a question from Rombo legislator Basil Mramba (CCM), who wanted the government to appeal to the government of Kenya so that people in Moshi district, Kilimanjaro region, were allowed to use water from Lake Chala.

Chiza however said the government was making efforts to search for other water sources. He said his ministry, in collaboration with water engineers from Pangani River in Tanga region, had completed a survey which showed the availability of underground water in 15 out of the 27 surveyed villages.

Chiza said they were expecting to construct deep water wells in the 15 villages by September, this year, to ensure the availability of safe and clean water for the residents of Moshi and Rombo districts.

He said Rombo district had a population of 240,000 people, who required 20,000 cubic metres of water per day, adding that the current water production in the district was only 15,000 cubic metres.
