First Lady Salma Kikwete yesterday cheated death after a lorry got in the way of her motorcade while on her way to Tarime and Rorya districts in Mara Region.
The incident occurred at around 9:30 am in Kirumi village, Musoma District, about 50 kilometres from Rorya district headquarters.
Eyewitnesses said that the lorry's driver suddenly got in the way of the first lady's convoy and was directly going to collide with her car when a security escort which was behind Salma’s vehicle shot a head and successfully pushed the first lady’s car to the roadside, thus averting the collision.
They said two vehicles, including one which was carrying journalists from Dar es Salaam and a Land Cruiser STK 4749 which was carrying security officers, were damaged in the accident.
Soon after the accident, Mara regional security officers led by Mara Regional Commissioner Enos Mfuru assembled around the first lady’s car for a while before the journey continued.
They said traffic police had earlier signalled the lorry's driver to stop but he allegedly defied the order. The police managed to impound the lorry after it had gone some six kilometres from the scene of the accident in the driver's attempt to get away.
Police sources said the lorry, with registration number T636 BDJ, was loaded with different types of clothes.
Police are holding the driver, Issa Omari, a resident of Babati village in Musoma District.
