THERE are mixed feelings about how African countries, and Tanzania in particular, should perceive China - in the wake of its becoming one of the top investors on this continent. This was reflected during the Policy Forum discussion at the British Council, on Friday last week, where two schools of thought emanated from the debate. The title for discussion was “China-Africa Trade and Investment Trends: Development and Environment Footprints in Tanzania”.Giving his assessment, Dr Cosmas Sokoni, who presented China’s trade and investment trends in Africa, said there are more benefits than shortcomings from the relationship between Africa and China.Dr Sokoni, who teaches geography at the University of Dar es Salaam, said that Chinese-Tanzanian bilateral cooperation began as early as the 1960s, when the bilateral agreements for cooperation were signed between the two countries.
